Tuberculosis Program

Tuberculosis remains very
common in PNG, affecting and often killing the young and the old.
However it can almost always be completely cured with 6-9 months or
treatment. This treatment is complicated and requires follow-up and
encouragement. Furthermore, case detection rates and cure rates must be
high for many years before the epidemic can be brought under control.
With funding from The Charitable Foundation and
GFATM (Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria), and
oversight from the World Health Organization, we coordinate tuberculosis
control for the National Capital District (Port Moresby and environs).
The strategy used is “DOTS” – Directly Observed Treatment Short-Course,
which involves community volunteers and dose monitoring so that cure is
achieved.
