Fuelwood

Wood is used for fuel in Papua New
Guinea – for cooking and also for fires around which people will sit in
the evenings. Hills and other wooded areas around the capital Port
Moresby have become denuded as people have cut down trees, resulting in
environmental damage, and the price of wood has risen. Fuelwood
plantations would help remedy these problems, and provide an income for
farmers.
We have commenced a
program to develop such plantations, in partnership with the University
of Adelaide, CSIRO, and others. The program is funded by ACIAR –
Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research.
